A Châtelaine derives from the French "lady of the castle", in its original form was a belt hook, worn by the lady of the castle, from which the keys of the castle were suspended. Popular from the 17^th century to the early 20^th century they began to evolve to support several chains from which accessoires were suspended. As women’s clothing were designed with no pockets, Châtelaines were used to carry around small but necessary everyday household objects. A typical ladies Châtelaine would have important keys, a pencil with small sheets to write, purses, étui, pomanders, vinaigrettes, and scissors amongst other everyday necessities. Not only were they practical but were ornamental fashion accessories. Châtelaines fell out of popularity at the beginning of the 20^th century when women started to work away from home.

This Châtelaines appendage and seven chains are ornamentally done in the repoussé decorative technique, each rosary style chain finishing with a dog clip. This exceptional example consists of; a pomander, envelope, mesh coin purse, scissors with sheath, pencil and week agenda with organic white material pages, heart shaped pin cushion, mirror, étui, and a thimble bucket.
