Recovered from the bottom of the Strait of Malacca comes this exceptional hand-painted Chinese blue and white tureen, cover, and stand. Oblong octagonal shape with hare-head handles, helmet finials, and painted with landscapes, pavilions, and triple-arched bridge. All three pieces have a washed blue trellis pattern border.
"The Diana" was owned by Palmer and Co. a powerful Calcutta ship owner and was licensed by the English East India Company to sail from Calcutta or Madras to Canton. Unfortunately on the 4th of March 1817 The Diana stuck rocks off the Straits of Malacca and sank to the depths of the ocean floor. Along with her 24,000 pieces intended for sale were lost for 177 years.
The wreck was identified and recovered in 1994 By Dorian Ball of Malaysian Historical Salvors and the porcelain was auctioned by Christie's in Amsterdam in March 1995.
